Metformin®

Daily oral pill

Ozempic (generic name: Semaglutide) is a GLP-1 agonist FDA approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Metformin (brand name: Glucophage, Riomet, Glumetza) is FDA approved to treat type 2 diabetes. However, its off-label use has shown effectiveness with weight loss.

How does

work:

  • Regulates the body’s response to insulin, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose and reduces appetite 

Common side effects of

Metformin®

  • abdominal pain
  • cough
  • nausea/vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • fast or shallow breathing
  • fever or chills
  • muscle pain or cramping
  • sleepiness
  • painful or difficult urination
  • metallic taste

Expected Results: 

  • Patients lost on average 5% of their body weight after 12 months

Do not take

Metformin®

if you:

  • have a history of renal (kidney) dysfunction 
  • have congestive heart failure needing drug treatment
  • are allergic to metformin or any of its ingredients 
  • have acute or chronic metabolic acidosis 
  • have impaired hepatic (liver) function
